WHAT IS THE BITCOIN HALVING?
The Bitcoin halving is an event that happens every 210,000 blocks, approximately every four years in which the reward for mining new blocks is cut in half.
This mechanism is built into the code of Bitcoin by its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, as a way to distribute coins in a precisely predictable way.
During the first era of Bitcoin, the reward for mining a block was 50 bitcoins. After the first halving in 2012, this reward dropped to 25 bitcoins. It halved again in 2016 to 12.5 bitcoins, and most recently in May 2020, the reward dropped to 6.25 bitcoins. The next halving is expected to occur in April 2024, where the reward will decrease to 3.125 bitcoins per block.
The rate of coins decreases like this exponentially over 32 “halvings” until block 6,720,000 (~year 2137), when it reaches 1 satoshi. Finally, after 6.93 million blocks, in approximately 2140, almost 21 million bitcoin, will have been issued.
The halving is a fundamental feature of Bitcoin. It reduces the rate at which new coins are created and thus given to miners as a reward for processing transactions and securing the blockchain. This reduction in supply has a positive effect on price, assuming demand remains strong, by creating a supply shock. It also points toward Bitcoin's deflationary nature, as there is a finite limit of 21 million bitcoins that will ever exist.
